As North America prepares for the excitement of a major soccer tournament this summer, the Lenovo Foundation is leveraging this moment to foster lasting educational benefits for students across the nation. In collaboration with the U.S. Soccer Foundation and Discovery Education, Lenovo has unveiled a new multi-year partnership aimed at integrating soccer-based learning experiences into middle school classrooms through the initiative, "Soccer for Success: Goals for Life."
This collaboration draws on three decades of youth development expertise from the U.S. Soccer Foundation and enhances it with Discovery Education’s digital instruction, which currently reaches over 45% of K-12 schools in the U.S. With a focus on skill-building and real-world applications, the program delivers free, ready-to-use resources that aim to deepen STEM engagement among students.
Calvin J. Crosslin, President of the Lenovo Foundation and Chief Inclusion Officer of Lenovo, stated, “We view sports as a catalyst for inclusion and education. We are thrilled with the opportunity to support the U.S. Soccer Foundation, the Virtual Field Trip, and its free access to educators on the Discovery Education platform. Sport is a proven global democratizer and will enable greater engagement and skilling for students – in STEM areas and in life.”
One of the initiative’s flagship offerings is "Beyond the Goal: A Virtual Field Trip to Soccer City USA." This experience, designed for grades 6–8 and filmed on location in Portland, Oregon, takes students behind the scenes of professional soccer. They will explore essential soft skills such as communication, leadership, resilience, and decision-making, as well as engineering concepts, directly through interactions with players, coaches, and experts in fields like nutrition and sports analytics.
Ed Foster-Simeon, President & CEO of the U.S. Soccer Foundation, emphasized the importance of this initiative. “This partnership with Discovery Education gives us a powerful new avenue to deliver on [our mission],” he said, pointing out the program’s potential to inspire students and expand access to essential learning and life skills.
For small business owners, particularly those in the education sector, the practical implications of this partnership are considerable. The program provides teachers with tailored resources that seamlessly align with middle school curriculum standards in health, science, and English Language Arts. This means that educators will benefit from integrated lesson plans that make learning relevant and engaging, while also resonating with students’ interests in sports.
Moreover, the focus on STEM education is crucial in today’s rapidly evolving job landscape. By fostering skills in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, this initiative prepares students for future careers that require these competencies, thus creating a pipeline of skilled labor for businesses.
However, while the partnership promises significant benefits, there may be challenges as well. Implementing new educational programs can strain existing resources, particularly in underfunded districts. Small business owners in the education sector may need to consider how they can support schools in overcoming these challenges, whether through sponsorship, offering professional development, or providing additional resources.
Additionally, while the initiative is designed to be easily accessible, awareness and adoption among educators could vary. Small business owners might explore opportunities for collaboration to promote these resources and ensure they reach the educators who can best utilize them.
Jake Dunlop, Senior Vice President of Corporate Partnerships at Discovery Education, echoed this sentiment by stating, “The U.S. Soccer Foundation shares our commitment to powering progress for young people, and together we’re delivering high-quality, no-cost learning experiences that engage students with remarkable access behind the scenes of professional soccer.”
As the soccer world turns its gaze to North America, this collaboration not only aims to leverage the excitement generated by the sport but also positions educators to utilize that enthusiasm in fostering important life skills and future career pathways for students. Small business owners and educators alike can find a wealth of opportunity in this partnership, making it a noteworthy development in the landscape of educational innovation.
