Instagram has announced the phased rollout of Teen Accounts in India, a move aimed at enhancing the online safety of young users on the platform. As concerns over cyberbullying, privacy risks, and exposure to inappropriate content grow, Instagram’s Teen Accounts offer built-in protections designed to create a more secure space for teens to engage online.
Natasha Jog, Director of Public Policy India at Instagram, emphasized the company’s commitment to a safer digital environment. “At Meta, creating a safer and more responsible digital environment is a top priority. With the expansion of Instagram Teen Accounts to India, we are strengthening protections, enhancing content controls, and empowering parents, while ensuring a safer experience for teens.”
Key benefits of the new Teen Accounts include stringent privacy settings and increased parental oversight. All accounts belonging to users under the age of 16 will be set to private by default, meaning they will have to approve follower requests, while non-followers will not have access to their content. Additionally, messaging will be restricted, allowing communication only with users they already know. By employing a robust set of automatic safeguards, Teen Accounts aim to empower users while fostering a responsible social media experience.
For parents, these accounts come equipped with supervision tools that enable them to monitor their teens’ online activities. Parents can approve safety setting changes and set daily limits for screen time. Eventually, Instagram plans to introduce features that will allow parents to directly adjust settings, offering even more control over their child’s online interactions.
Mansi Zaveri, Founder and CEO of Kidsstoppress.com, highlights the advantages of these features. “Teen safety online is a growing concern for parents, and Instagram’s new Teen Accounts feature is a step in the right direction. Strengthening privacy settings, limiting unwanted interactions, and adding parental supervision tools can help create a safer space for young users.”
The enhanced protections include a series of automated settings to reduce exposure to potentially harmful content. For instance, teens will receive reminders to take breaks after spending an hour on the app and will have “Sleep Mode” enabled to mute notifications overnight. They will also have their accounts protected against unwanted interactions through tools like the “Hidden Words” feature, which filters out offensive comments and direct messages.
While the Teen Accounts come with significant safety measures, there are practical applications that small business owners need to consider. For businesses targeting younger audiences, the introduction of these accounts underscores a shift in how brands communicate with teens. Marketers may need to adjust their strategies to prioritize respectful engagement and realistic portrayals that resonate with this age group.
However, challenges exist as businesses navigate these changes. As Instagram enforces stricter age verification measures to prevent teens from misrepresenting their ages, brands will need to maintain a careful, ethically-driven marketing approach. Complying with new safety regulations may require additional training for those responsible for digital marketing and communications.
Uma Subramanian, Co-Founder and Director of the RATI Foundation, points out the importance of balance in this technological landscape. “The recent updates to Instagram’s teen accounts introduce an additional layer of security and represent an incremental step toward strengthening online safety on Meta platforms. Balancing teen autonomy and online safety remains a complex challenge, and this initiative is a move in that direction.”
As small businesses look to engage with younger consumers on social media, the introduction of Teen Accounts could serve as a good reminder of the importance of ethical and responsible marketing practices. Staying abreast of changes in the digital landscape—such as the new safety measures on Instagram—will be critical for businesses aiming to communicate effectively and responsibly with teen audiences.
