In a significant advancement for UK healthcare, Oracle Health has officially launched its Clinical AI Agent, Clinical Note, aimed at augmenting the efficiency of medical professionals. Following a successful pilot program at various NHS Trusts, this innovative AI tool promises to streamline patient documentation, allowing doctors and nurses to dedicate more time to patient care—an essential shift in the current healthcare landscape.

As the NHS grapples with increasing pressure from growing patient lists and administrative burdens, the deployment of the Clinical AI Agent could provide a crucial lifeline. The solution leverages ambient voice technology, enabling caregivers at NHS trusts and private practices to effortlessly draft patient notes through voice and screen interactions. This means clinicians can bypass the tedious process of navigating dropdown menus and typing on laptops, instead spending valuable time engaging directly with patients.

“Using the Clinical AI Agent has been really fantastic,” remarked Robin Kearney, a consultant in acute medicine at Milton Keynes University Hospital. Kearney noted that the tool has significantly improved the accuracy of his notes while allowing him to complete documentation efficiently. Reflecting on the transformative impact of the technology, he stated, “I can complete my letter and give it to the patient before they even leave the department.”

Oracle’s introduction of this AI-powered solution aligns with the UK Government’s 10-Year Health Plan, "Fit for the Future," which emphasizes the integration of innovative technologies in healthcare. The plan aims to harness advancements in artificial intelligence and digital solutions to improve patient care across the board. Oracle Health’s initiative is a direct response to these ambitions, addressing not only the demand for quicker patient care but also the risk of clinician burnout associated with excessive administrative duties.

The pilot program involved NHS organizations such as Barts Health NHS Trust, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, and Milton Keynes University Hospital, which are already rolling out the solution more broadly. According to Sarah Jensen, Group Chief Informatics Officer at Barts Health NHS Trust, clinicians who adopted the Clinical AI Agent could document patient visits in real-time, drastically reducing time spent on notes. She noted, “They just need to download the app on their phone, place it near the patient to record the conversation, and this is processed in the trust system to strip out any chat that is not relevant to diagnosis or treatment.”

Challenges remain, of course. For small business owners in the healthcare sector, the integration of AI technology will require investment, training, and a reevaluation of existing workflows. Seema Verma, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Oracle Health and Life Sciences, emphasized the urgency of addressing clinician burnout caused by administrative burdens: “By embedding advanced AI-powered capabilities into their workflows, we are directly tackling the administrative burden that contributes to burnout and hinders clinicians’ ability to focus on providing patient care.”

With the Clinical AI Agent already operational in over 300 organizations in the U.S., this technology has reportedly saved doctors more than 200,000 hours, reducing documentation time per patient by approximately 40 percent.
