A recent survey from Reimagine Main Street reveals that small businesses across the U.S. are increasingly recognizing the importance of artificial intelligence (AI) to remain competitive in today’s marketplace. Conducted in partnership with PayPal, the survey of nearly 1,000 small businesses indicates that 82% of owners view AI adoption as crucial for staying relevant. With over half of respondents currently exploring AI tools, it’s clear that many are eager to integrate this technology into their operations.
"Small business owners are already putting AI to work," stated Tammy Halevy, Executive Director of Reimagine Main Street. According to Halevy, one in four businesses have incorporated AI into their daily activities, while many more—51%—are actively experimenting with various AI solutions. This transition shows a shift in mindset; businesses are no longer questioning "if" they should adopt AI, but rather "when" and "how."
The survey segments small businesses into three categories: Active Users, Explorers, and Non-Users. Active Users have integrated AI solutions into their operations and are now seeking advanced capabilities beyond just efficiency. Explorers are still testing or researching options but have yet to make a commitment. Non-Users are those who currently have no plans for AI adoption.
With a shift toward strategic applications, Active Users report that more than 75% believe marketing and customer engagement will see the most significant impact from AI. A considerable number expressed interest in automating tasks such as marketing content creation (84%) and customer service (59%). Another interesting finding is that financial intelligence tools like AI-powered cash flow forecasting could resolve critical pain points for 53% of those surveyed.
This interest in AI perspectives aligns with broader market trends emphasizing the necessity for businesses to adapt. Rhett Buttle, President of Public Private Strategies Institute, emphasizes that as businesses witness substantial benefits from early applications of AI, their focus is shifting toward more sophisticated solutions. "AI isn’t just a nice-to-have tool for saving time—it’s becoming essential for maintaining competitiveness in today’s market," says Buttle.
While the outlook is optimistic, challenges remain for those categorized as Explorers. Many are dealing with security concerns (38%), resource constraints (37%), and uncertain returns on investment (34%). Despite their interest, these businesses often find themselves stuck in limbo. Even though Explorers show eagerness for AI integration, they seek specific support, including proven business value and user-friendly tooling. Notably, 74% would be more inclined to adopt solutions with clearer ROI evidence, while 73% desire simpler tools, and the need for practical training ranks high across all segments.
This reflected interest indicates that the question of AI readiness is less about skepticism and more about varying engagement levels among small businesses. In fact, a significant portion—76%—of respondents falls into the categories of Active Users or Explorers.
Driving this momentum for adoption are two main factors: competitive necessity and resilience against uncertainty. Sixty-six percent of small business owners believe that adopting AI is essential for remaining competitive, while 63% of current users see AI as a tool to bolster resilience during economic challenges.
One compelling testament comes from small business owner Katrina Golden of Lil Mama’s Sweets and Treats. "What used to take me hours now takes minutes, giving me back time to focus on growth strategies and customer relationships," Golden explained. Her account illustrates the practical benefits that AI can provide beyond mere efficiency.
This survey, conducted by Reimagine Main Street, underscores the urgent need for small business owners to explore AI technologies in a meaningful way. With the vast potential for innovation, benefiting various sectors, the onus is now on small businesses to transition to this pivotal moment in their operational frameworks.
