In a significant move aimed at boosting the digital transformation of small businesses in the UK, Intuit Inc. has launched the Intuit Small Business Growth Council. This initiative seeks to empower small enterprises through enhanced access to AI and digital tools, providing a crucial lifeline for many who remain disconnected from available technologies.
Despite a strong correlation between digital adoption and increased productivity—with digitally connected businesses reporting 2.4 times higher productivity and 2.3 times greater revenue—the reality is stark. Over 25% of small businesses in the UK are still not utilizing basic digital tools. This gap highlights a pressing need for advocacy and support, making the establishment of the Council timely and relevant for the small business community.
Key stakeholders in the initiative include 18 digitally-focused business leaders who will elevate small business voices in policy debates that influence technology adoption and economic growth. Notable members include Afiya Titus from Coco Financial, Emma Thomson of Gemz by Emz, and James Vincent from Hot Source Creative, who are poised to engage directly with policymakers.
At the launch event hosted at the Department of Business and Trade in London, Intuit CEO Sasan Goodarzi emphasized the importance of this initiative by stating, "When businesses succeed, communities and economies prosper. Together with the UK government’s focus on digital adoption, we can fuel the success of small businesses with the use of data and AI to automate and complete tasks and workflows, from lead to cash, helping every business thrive."
The Council aims to address three core areas essential for small business growth:
-
Driving Digital Adoption: This entails developing strategies to reduce the barriers that prevent small businesses from embracing digital tools. The objective is to advocate for better resources and support systems, allowing small firms to harness the benefits of digital transformation.
-
Simplifying Business Administration: By streamlining administrative processes and advocating for smarter, digital-first solutions, the Council aims to help small businesses save precious time. Programs like Making Tax Digital (MTD) have already generated significant savings, and continued efforts to reduce administrative burdens will be a priority.
- Democratizing Access to AI: Ensuring that small businesses are not left behind in the AI revolution is critical. The Council will work to make AI tools more accessible while ensuring small businesses have a voice in relevant discussions, creating an inclusive environment for all.
While the benefits of these initiatives are clear—improving productivity and driving revenue—there are challenges that small business owners should be aware of. High costs associated with technology adoption, the complexity of digital tools, and existing regulatory barriers could hinder wide-scale implementation. It is important for businesses to assess these obstacles carefully when considering new digital strategies.
This initiative draws on the successes of the Intuit Small Business Council in the United States, where advocacy has resulted in impactful policy changes, including the Small Business Technological Innovation Act. The UK Council is hopeful that a similar trajectory can be achieved through their dedication to amplifying small business needs in the face of ongoing digital transformation.
Secretary of State for Business and Trade, Jonathan Reynolds, noted, "AI and digital tools can be game changers for small businesses’ productivity, but we know there are barriers which get in the way of widespread adoption, which is why Intuit’s Small Business Growth Council is so important." His remarks reflect a government acknowledgment of the hurdles small businesses face and a commitment to facilitating their transition into the digital age.
Members of the Council, such as Rose Sellman-Leava from Inclusive Futures UK, believe this initiative provides small business owners with a critical platform to voice their needs concerning technology and policy frameworks. "This Council will give small business owners a seat at the table, helping to make sure digital transformation is accessible, practical, and truly beneficial for businesses of all sizes," she stated.
As the landscape of small business continues to evolve, initiatives like the Intuit Small Business Growth Council will be crucial in bridging the gap between technology and SMEs. For more information about the Council and its mission, visit the Intuit blog.
