Chiang Mai University Leverages AWS Generative AI for Cutting-Edge Educational Solutions

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced an innovative partnership with Chiang Mai University (CMU) in Thailand, marking a significant advancement in educational technology. This collaboration has resulted in the development of two generative artificial intelligence platforms—ChatGen and Matthew—designed to transform the educational landscape for over 52,000 CMU staff and students.

With a focus on democratizing access to AI, the platforms aim to enhance educational experiences, streamline operations, and support research initiatives. In an age where a staggering 86% of students already employ AI tools in their studies, CMU is positioning itself at the forefront of this technological wave, offering free AI resources and guidance that respect students’ diverse needs and ethical standards.

The flagship platform, ChatGen, harnesses AWS AI services to provide users with sophisticated capabilities, including answering queries with document references, summarizing content, analyzing data and images, and even translating text. This functionality helps to create a robust educational environment where information is readily accessible.

CMU’s initiative is timely, particularly as the need for a responsible approach to AI adoption in academia has become evident. Notably, 54% of students use AI tools weekly, which underscores the urgency for educational institutions to integrate such technologies in constructive, ethical manners.

In building ChatGen, CMU utilized AWS’s advanced infrastructure to enable a highly agile, scalable, and secure platform. The system integrates Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) technology which draws responses from a range of AI models based on university-specific documents and data. As Dr. Chaiy Rungsiyakull, Director of the Smart Campus Management Center at CMU, articulates, “Becoming an AI University isn’t just about using new tech—it’s about rethinking how we teach, research, and work.”

The platform’s user experience has been tailored to facilitate seamless interactions through standard university accounts, making it accessible across devices. An exemplary feature is the Student Compass AI assistant. This tool not only helps students to align their academic pursuits with career goals, but also provides guidance in course selection, scheduling, and degree tracking.

CMU’s other platform, Matthew, complements ChatGen by enabling professors to create customized AI assistants for various courses. To date, over 1,000 such assistants have been developed, allowing for a broad range of applications, including course material preparation and support for intelligent tutoring. Assistant Professor Thanatip Chankong highlights that Matthew has transformed his teaching methods: “I can now use it to create an AI assistant named Kathi that guides students from all faculties to write prompts for situations in their fields. Kathi evaluates results and provides encouraging feedback for improvement. My students love how it helps them in a step-by-step way, building their confidence in using AI as a practical tool.”
