In a bold move toward modernization and customer-centricity, Lubbock Power & Light (LP&L) is transforming its service delivery by adopting a new competitive retail electric model. With assistance from Oracle, this historic shift positions the utility as the first municipally owned operation in Texas to voluntarily deregulate electricity services since the relevant legislation was enacted 25 years ago.

LP&L’s transition comes after more than a century of serving as Lubbock’s municipal electric provider. By joining the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) system, LP&L now plans to offer its customers a variety of retail electric options while maintaining its commitment to reliable infrastructure. The collaboration with Oracle has provided LP&L with essential technologies, including Advanced Meter Infrastructure (AMI), to facilitate this significant undertaking.

“Joining the ERCOT system accomplishes the long-term customer goals LP&L set forth when we began this process many years ago,” said Clint Gardner, Chief Customer Officer for LP&L. “Oracle’s solutions and guidance have been pivotal components of this journey for the past five years, and their experience with deregulated markets was especially helpful in keeping us on track to complete our business model transition.”
