Eighty-two percent of small businesses recognize that adopting artificial intelligence (AI) is critical for remaining competitive in today’s market. However, a significant hurdle exists: seventy-three percent of these businesses lack the necessary tools and training to implement AI effectively. Addressing this gap, PayPal has teamed up with Anthropic to empower small businesses through free AI training, paving the way for enhanced efficiency and growth.
The initiative, branded as AI Fluency for Small Business, introduces a no-cost, online course designed to equip entrepreneurs with essential AI knowledge. This course merges insights from seasoned business owners and AI researchers, presenting a practical learning experience. Amy Bonitatibus, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer at PayPal, emphasized the importance of this partnership in her statement: “Together, we are equipping business owners and entrepreneurs with the tools, expertise, and trusted infrastructure they need to compete and thrive — and creating new opportunities for them to innovate, grow, and better serve their customers.”
Key features of the course include nine lessons that utilize interactive videos and self-paced learning. The content is based on the 4D AI Fluency framework, ensuring learners can apply AI in a safe and effective manner. Upon completion, participants receive a certificate that can be showcased within their professional networks, enhancing their credibility and marketability.
Real-world applications come to life through testimonials from successful entrepreneurs like Mak Cabessa, the founder of MAKS TIPM Rebuilders and a long-time PayPal merchant. Mak’s journey from a local shop to a global player illustrates the transformative potential of AI. With practical advice, he encourages fellow small business owners to give AI the context it needs, question its outputs, treat interactions as iterative conversations, and provide comprehensive background information. Such insights can empower small business owners to leverage AI in ways that genuinely enhance their operations.
Beyond educational initiatives, the partnership will introduce Claude for Small Business, a new plugin designed to integrate seamlessly with existing tools such as QuickBooks and HubSpot. This AI-driven assistant will facilitate everyday tasks like invoicing and refunds, allowing for improved operational efficiency. By connecting directly to PayPal’s platform, Claude enhances operational capabilities while ensuring that business owners maintain control over their transactions.
As the initiative evolves, PayPal plans to collaborate with nonprofit organizations to expand access to AI training and support services for small businesses globally. The overarching goal remains clear: to ensure that the technological advancements shaping the economy are accessible to every entrepreneur striving to build something substantial.
While there’s no denying the potential benefits of adopting AI, small business owners should also consider the challenges involved. Incorporating new technologies requires investment in both time and resources, and not all businesses may find the immediate need for AI solutions. It’s important to evaluate existing workflows and identify areas that would benefit the most from AI applications. Small businesses must also ensure their teams are prepared for the changes that new technologies can bring, from alterations in daily operations to shifts in customer interactions.
To encapsulate the essence of this collaboration, Dr. Kristen Swanson, an AI Fluency researcher at Anthropic, stated, “The next wave of AI adoption is going to be driven by corner shops, solo founders, and family businesses — some of the most resourceful operators in the economy.” With this initiative, PayPal and Anthropic aim to facilitate essential skill development that empowers small business owners to harness the power of AI effectively.
