Puerto Rico Customers Endure 27-Hour Annual Power Loss Despite No Hurricanes, US Energy Reports

Share

In recent years, Puerto Rico’s power grid has faced significant challenges, leaving small business owners with pressing concerns about electricity reliability. New data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) projects that from 2021 to 2024, Puerto Rican customers experienced an average of 27 hours of electricity interruptions annually, starkly contrasting to the roughly two hours of interruptions faced by customers in the continental United States during the same timeframe.

For small businesses operating in Puerto Rico, these frequent disruptions can translate into substantial operational difficulties, affecting everything from productivity to customer service. The EIA report reveals that in 2024, customers faced an alarming average of over 73 hours without power when factoring in major events like hurricanes. To put this into perspective, Hurricane Ernesto left at least one million customers without power, and Hurricane Fiona resulted in all 1.5 million electricity customers being affected, culminating in nearly 200 hours of disruptions.

“Understanding these interruptions is crucial for small business owners,” explains Lindsay Aramayo, a principal contributor to the report. “The data not only highlights the time businesses may lose but also suggests areas where owners can potentially mitigate risks.”

The frequency of service interruptions in Puerto Rico is alarming. In 2024 alone, the average Puerto Rican customer experienced 19 service interruptions, a notable increase from previous years. This pattern raises a red flag, especially when compared to mainland U.S. customers, who typically endured only 1.3 interruptions, even including those caused by severe weather.

The challenges facing Puerto Rico’s electrical system are multi-faceted. Issues with the transmission and distribution system, along with vegetation management problems that interfere with power lines, contribute heavily to service interruptions. Additionally, the island’s reliance on a limited number of generators powered by petroleum, natural gas, or coal—providing roughly half of its electric generating capacity—can quickly compromise system reliability in the event of equipment failure or fuel shortages.

For small business owners, such consistent outages pose immediate challenges, ranging from lost sales and reduced productivity to compromised customer trust. In an environment where the cost of downtime can significantly impact a business’s bottom line, exploring backup power solutions and emergency plans is imperative.

Taking practical steps to mitigate these risks is essential. Small business owners might consider investing in generators or solar energy solutions. These alternatives not only provide power during outages but can also serve as long-term cost-saving measures given the rising costs associated with diesel and other fossil fuels. Formulating comprehensive business continuity plans that include strategies for power interruptions can also help businesses remain resilient.

However, the transition to alternative energy sources poses its challenges. Business owners must navigate potential upfront costs and the time required to implement new systems or practices. Additionally, there may be regulatory hurdles in adopting renewable energy technologies, which could deter some from making the switch.

In summary, understanding the factors behind Puerto Rico’s energy reliability issues is essential for small business owners aiming to thrive amid ongoing challenges. By arming themselves with knowledge and proactive strategies, they stand a better chance of mitigating the impact of power interruptions on their operations. Small businesses in Puerto Rico must prioritize power resilience to ensure they can navigate this unpredictable energy landscape.
