SBA Allocates $1.1 Million to Boost Made in America Manufacturing

Share

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) is taking a significant step to bolster America’s small manufacturing sector by awarding $1.1 million in grants aimed at providing crucial training and technical support. This funding will empower small manufacturers across various regions, enhancing capabilities in critical industries and aligning with the agency’s ongoing “Made in America Manufacturing Initiative.”

SBA Administrator Kelly Loeffler emphasized the importance of supporting small manufacturers, most of which are small businesses. “The SBA is focused on delivering for America’s manufacturers by offering the capital and resources they need to rebuild America’s industrial strength,” Loeffler stated. The agency aims to provide tools that help small manufacturers not only thrive but also expand their operations.

The grants will support the Empower to Grow (E2G) Program, which offers eligible small manufacturers free access to topical courses, hands-on training, and personalized consulting aimed at improving growth, operational efficiency, hiring practices, compliance with regulations, and competitiveness in government contracting.

Small business owners can benefit directly from the expertise provided by the three organizations selected to administer this grant funding:

The Ohio State University, through its Center for Design and Manufacturing Excellence, will serve central Ohio. The initiative focuses on developing key skills among production staff, such as manual machining, welding, and blueprint interpretation. Courses will range from foundational manufacturing skills to advanced training in digital manufacturing technologies. By expanding access to reskilling opportunities, the program aims to prepare workers for roles in industrial automation.

In West Virginia, the Bluefield Economic Development Authority (BEDA) is leading the Bluefield BUILD initiative. This multifaceted approach recognizes that workforce development is essential for supporting business growth. “Business growth is constrained without a skilled workforce,” the BEDA spokesperson noted. Their program will help integrate training across community colleges and technical education centers, customizing operator training for specific manufacturing technologies and soft skills essential for job seekers.

The University of Tennessee Center for Industrial Services (UT CIS) will reach manufacturers statewide, specifically targeting underserved regions with workforce shortages. The initiative aims to offer workforce training and technical assistance in economically distressed areas, a move expected to impact 150 individuals across 20 to 25 small manufacturing businesses. UT CIS plans to deliver training right at the manufacturers’ facilities, which can lead to practical, immediate application of new skills.

These initiatives do not come without their challenges. Small business owners may face hurdles such as adapting to new training formats or keeping up with rapidly changing technology. However, the potential for increased competitiveness and operational efficiency makes these opportunities significant.

For those considering participation in the E2G Program, it’s worth noting that the grants aim to increase access to training that prepares businesses for government contracts. This aligns well with small businesses eager to enhance their procurement strategies and take advantage of federal, state, and local contract opportunities.

With the grants facilitated through the E2G Program, small manufacturers are poised to receive the necessary support to rebuild and thrive in an evolving economic landscape. The commitment from the SBA demonstrates a tangible investment in the future of American manufacturing and the vital role small businesses play in this sector.

As small business owners navigate their growth journeys, opportunities such as these offer a pathway to enhance skills, improve efficiency, and ultimately contribute to a robust American manufacturing sector.
