Amazon Web Services (AWS) has officially launched its Mexico (Central) Region, marking a significant milestone in the country’s digital transformation and creating opportunities for small businesses, startups, and enterprises alike. With over $5 billion planned investment in the next 15 years, the new region is set to serve as a foundation for innovative technology solutions across various sectors in Mexico.
The AWS Mexico (Central) Region provides businesses with localized infrastructure, allowing them to run applications and store data securely within the country. This is particularly beneficial for companies that require data residency solutions to comply with local regulations while enjoying the advantages of AWS’s expansive service portfolio. By establishing three Availability Zones within the new region, AWS helps customers ensure business continuity with lower latency, which is critical for high-availability applications.
“Today’s launch represents a significant milestone in Mexico’s digital transformation journey,” said Marcelo Ebrard, Mexican secretary of Economy. “AWS’s investment will strengthen Mexico’s technology infrastructure and unlock new opportunities for innovation, economic growth, and digital inclusion.”
For small business owners, this development means lower operational costs and improved efficiency. AWS’s robust infrastructure allows companies to launch their products faster, scale operations seamlessly, and enhance their competitiveness in both local and global markets. Notable local entities like BBVA, Hospital Angeles, and Grupo Lala are already leveraging AWS infrastructure to innovate and expand their services. For instance, BBVA is utilizing the new regional infrastructure to bolster its technological capabilities and improve the security of its financial services.
Additionally, AWS’s $300,000 InCommunities Fund aims to support local community projects, reflecting a commitment to social impact. This kind of investment not only fosters local talent but also fuels economic growth, with an estimated addition of over $10 billion to Mexico’s GDP and the creation of more than 7,000 full-time equivalent jobs annually.
"With access to secure and reliable infrastructure, along with a broad set of AWS technologies, this new region will help businesses across Mexico sit at the center of AI and ML innovation," stated Prasad Kalyanaraman, vice president of Infrastructure Services at AWS. "We’re proud to deepen our investment in Mexico to help support business transformation, foster technology talent, build cloud skills, and create opportunities for economic growth."
However, small business owners interested in this new opportunity should prepare for certain challenges. While AWS offers extensive support and a suite of tools for cloud migration and application deployment, businesses will need to invest time in understanding how to effectively utilize these resources. Training staff and upskilling to leverage AWS’s offerings like AI, machine learning, and analytics will be essential for maximizing the benefits.
Moreover, as with any rapid expansion of infrastructure, potential concerns regarding data privacy and compliance with local regulations may arise. Small businesses must ensure they are knowledgeable about applicable laws, especially if they operate in sensitive industries such as healthcare or finance.
Despite these challenges, the AWS Mexico (Central) Region positions businesses to not only thrive domestically but also compete effectively on a global scale. Startups such as Jüsto, an online grocery delivery service, express enthusiasm for the localized infrastructure, anticipating improvements in compliance with data residency regulations and enhanced customer service capabilities.
“As Mexico’s first 100% digital supermarket, we are excited about the opportunity to innovate on AWS infrastructure right here in Mexico,” said Oleksandr Shcherbina, CTO at Jüsto. “The new Region will allow us to improve data storage compliance and benefit from the convenience, ease, and security of building on AWS.”
As AWS continues to expand its services globally, small business owners in Mexico are encouraged to explore the multitude of solutions available through its new region. With a commitment to supporting local initiatives, fostering digital skills, and democratizing access to cloud technology, AWS is making a concerted effort to connect Mexican businesses with the tools they need to succeed in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.
