Amazon Unveils Sustainable Distribution Center in Enns to Serve Linz Region

Share

Amazon is expanding its footprint in Austria with the groundbreaking of a new distribution center in Enns, designed to enhance local logistics and create significant employment opportunities. Local officials joined Amazon representatives to mark the start of construction, signaling a major investment of approximately €70 million in the region.

The new facility, known as DAP1, is set to span around 6,900 square meters and is expected to be operational by spring 2027. It promises to generate over 100 direct jobs and several hundred additional positions through local delivery partners, reflecting Amazon’s commitment to supporting the local economy.

Jordan Kremnitzer, Amazon’s Regional Director for Austria, emphasized the importance of this distribution center for customers in Linz and the surrounding areas: "Our Austrian customers highly value our fast and reliable delivery, and we continuously invest in modernizing our existing distribution centers and expanding to new locations."

Amazon’s distribution centers play a crucial role in achieving quick and efficient delivery, particularly for the “last mile”—the final segment of the delivery journey to customers’ homes. Since entering the Austrian market in 2018, Amazon has established several similar facilities, indicating a strong focus on logistics in the country.

This project does not just bring economic benefits; it also aims to enhance local infrastructure. The agreement with the municipality includes the construction of a new cycle path and a bus stop, signaling cooperation between Amazon and local officials. Mayor Christian Deleja-Hotko expressed the importance of these developments: “The establishment of Amazon’s distribution center in Enns brings new perspectives for our community and enhances local transport links."

From a broader regional perspective, Werner Pamminger, Managing Director of Business Upper Austria, praised the investment as a major boon for the region’s economy. He remarked, "The groundbreaking is more than just a construction start; it represents new jobs in the area and confirms Upper Austria as an attractive destination for business investments."

Sustainability is another key pillar of the new facility. Planned features include a photovoltaic system capable of generating 280 kWp of energy and the use of primarily renewable energy sources from a central heating network. Construction materials will also be CO₂-reduced, and green roofs and open spaces will be created with a focus on promoting local biodiversity through native plant species and habitats for pollinators.

Valentin Oswald, Regional Manager at Goldbeck Rhomberg, highlighted the project’s ecological goals: "Our planning and construction decisions aim for a resource-efficient outcome, creating a facility that marries advanced logistics with responsible resource management."

However, small business owners should also remain aware of potential challenges associated with the expansion of such a large facility within their locality. Increased traffic, particularly from delivery vehicles, could impact residential areas and local roads if not managed effectively. Ensuring that delivery routes minimize disruption during peak hours is crucial—Amazon plans to operate delivery vehicles outside these busy times, but the success of this plan will depend on how effectively it is implemented.

The establishment of this new distribution center is part of a broader narrative about the role of e-commerce giants like Amazon in supporting local economies. Approximately 400 small and medium-sized enterprises in Upper Austria already leverage Amazon’s platform for sales, with over 2.4 million products sold in 2024 alone. This trend underscores the potential of e-commerce for small businesses to reach a wider audience in an increasingly digital market.

In summary, Amazon’s new distribution center in Enns promises to deliver economic benefits and enhance local infrastructure while also emphasizing sustainability. Local businesses may find new opportunities for growth, but must also remain vigilant to potential disruptions that come with such developments. As small business owners navigate these changes, proactive engagement with municipal and corporate stakeholders will be essential for maximizing the positive impacts of this significant investment.
