Stéphane Israël, Managing Director of AWS European Sovereign Cloud and Digital Sovereignty, emphasizes the demand for a sovereign cloud that does not compromise on functionality. “Customers have told us they need a sovereign cloud that doesn’t require them to make trade-offs in capabilities. That’s exactly what we’ve built,” he stated. The rapid adoption by firms in financial services, healthcare, and the public sector indicates a pressing need for secure cloud solutions.
A variety of organizations, including the German credit information provider SCHUFA, are migrating sensitive workloads to the AWS European Sovereign Cloud. SCHUFA plans to move workloads from its on-premises data centers to enhance its digital credit scoring system, ensuring the protection of financial data for more than 69 million German consumers. Dr. Klaus Kolitz, CTO of SCHUFA Holding AG, remarked, “The AWS European Sovereign Cloud gives us what we need: a fully isolated infrastructure within the EU, operated exclusively by personnel based in Europe.”

New collaborators like Colt Technology Services, euNetworks, OpenText, and Vodafone are bringing solutions tailored for AWS European Sovereign Cloud customers. As of now, more than 165 solutions optimized for the AWS European Sovereign Cloud are available on the AWS Marketplace, encompassing areas such as infrastructure software, cloud operations, and AI tools. Furthermore, SAP Cloud ERP Private is now available for AWS European Sovereign Cloud customers, featuring security-enhanced cloud solutions tailored to regulated industries. Widdix, a German software provider specializing in cloud security, is also utilizing the AWS European Sovereign Cloud to run its workloads confidently. Andreas Wittig, a co-founder, stated, “As a German software provider and customer, we use the AWS European Sovereign Cloud to operate our workloads with full confidence in data residency and operational autonomy within the EU.”
AWS is continuously expanding services on the European Sovereign Cloud, introducing features such as AWS Network Firewall and advanced computing options using NVIDIA GPUs. New AI functionalities, including models from Mistral AI and OpenAI, will be made available, allowing businesses to develop generative AI applications that meet European sovereignty, performance, and cost requirements.
