AWS Report: AI Adoption Soars 33%, But Europe Risks Widening Gap

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has recently unveiled a significant report, "Unlocking Italy’s AI Potential," highlighting a surge in artificial intelligence (AI) adoption among Italian businesses. With 40% of companies now utilizing AI—up 33% from the previous year—this trend is notably strong among small and medium enterprises (SMEs), where adoption rates stand at 38%. The report underscores the growing importance of cloud technology, noting that 70% of Italian firms have integrated cloud solutions, reinforcing the role of cloud infrastructure as a critical enabler of AI innovation.

According to the study commissioned by AWS and conducted by Strand Partners, a remarkable 66% of responding businesses have seen productivity boosts from AI tools. Furthermore, 90% of participants anticipate that AI will drive growth within the next year. Among AI users, 72% report accelerated innovation timelines over the past two years, with that figure rising to 88% for startups.

Despite this promising growth, the adoption of AI remains in its infancy for many Italian companies. Almost 60% focus solely on basic AI applications, such as publicly available chatbots. Only 13% have advanced to deploying sophisticated AI systems capable of custom solutions and autonomous operations. The current trajectory suggests it could take until 2034 for half of Italian businesses to reach this advanced utilization level, highlighting an immediate need for structural acceleration in AI deployment.

Challenges surrounding AI implementation are notable. One survey finding reveals that knowledge of agentic AI—AI that can plan, reason, and act independently—is limited, with only 18% of firms aware of the technology. Interestingly, however, once familiarized with it, 55% express intent to utilize agentic AI, indicating a strong unmet potential that demands focused investment in skills and experimentation.

Despite increased adoption rates, innovation linked to AI has decreased. The proportion of businesses launching new AI-driven products or services dropped from 40% in 2025 to 34% this year. Factors contributing to this stagnation include regulatory challenges, skill shortages, and insufficient investment.

The report reveals that 34% of Italian startups are contemplating leaving Europe to foster growth—primarily due to greater access to funding (52%), improved international expansion opportunities (48%), and superior support systems like incubators and partnerships (40%).

The impediments to AI adoption in Italy are multifaceted. Regulatory hurdles complicate operations across markets, leading to increased costs and delays. In fact, 34% of Italian firms’ tech spending is allocated to compliance—up from 30% the previous year—compared to 42% across Europe. Furthermore, nearly half (48%) of companies cite a lack of internal AI skills, limiting opportunities for expansion, while 40% report no dedicated budget for AI, stifling projects beyond pilot phases.

AWS emphasizes the urgency of addressing these challenges. Giulia Gasparini, AWS Country Leader in Italy, stated, “Artificial intelligence is no longer just a promise—it is the lever reshaping the future of Italian businesses. The potential is still largely untapped, and the time to act is now. We believe every business, from startups to enterprises, deserves the tools to turn ambition into concrete innovation.”

To help bridge these gaps, AWS is committed to investing in education and training. By 2026, the company aims to prepare 200,000 Italian students in STEM fields through its "Amazon Future Engineer" program.

Successful examples of AI application in Italy illustrate potential benefits. For instance, Vection Technologies leverages AWS to enhance communication for the deaf and hard of hearing, utilizing a sophisticated integration of AI technologies. Similarly, the Sardinia Regional Environmental Protection Agency is modernizing environmental data management through AWS solutions, enabling real-time monitoring of air, water, and soil quality.

For business owners eager to explore the latest in AI and cloud computing, the AWS Summit Milano 2026 presents a prime opportunity.
