During the 2023 Microsoft Global Hackathon, a team led by Microsoft account executive Shaili Desai identified a pressing issue faced by a Bay Area client in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) sector. “They were grappling with the problem of disjointed processes and data silos,” Shaili explained. Many existing solutions focused on niche issues but failed to solve the overarching problems leading to inefficiencies. That’s when the idea for the Intelligent Construction Portal was born—a centralized platform pulling together essential data from Microsoft’s cloud solutions and productivity applications.
Microsoft business leader Sonya Weaver-Johnson, who has extensive experience in the AEC sector, emphasized the importance of the hackathon experience. “I love Hackathons because they offer a unique opportunity to tackle real-world problems,” she said, reflecting the vibrant atmosphere of collaboration. The diverse team quickly assembled to create a prototype that integrated analytical tools for project management, providing construction companies with actionable insights to keep projects on track and within budget.

Fluor Executive Vice President and Chief Information Officer Robert Taylor highlighted the necessity for a tool that would serve as a "single pane of glass" to visualize the company’s data across various business lines. After engaging with Microsoft’s Hackathon team, Fluor initiated the pilot of the "Project Portal," which uses Microsoft Teams and Power BI to deliver an enriched data experience.
This adoption marks a significant shift for small businesses in the construction industry. Owners can benefit from a streamlined approach to data management and project analysis. The Intelligent Construction Portal gives them the capability to leverage predictive analytics—helping them identify reliable contractors and make timely decisions about materials, thus addressing common industry pain points.
